    Students from the Highland high school help to cheer on the football team by having a theme for each home game. Senior Chelsey Lampe said, “We decided to do themes every home game because we wanted to support the boys in a fun way.”

  • Conservation Station at the Fair

    The Conservation Station is coming to the Washington County Fair Tuesday, July 15 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

    The Conservation Station is a mobile learning center that travels across the state teaching all Iowans what they can do to improve water quality and keep Iowa’s soil in place—helping to build a Culture of Conservation.

    Randy Johnson, 56, of rural Columbus Junction, died Friday, October 3, 2014, at the University of Iowa Hospital. Funeral services were Tuesday, October 7, at the Stacy-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Columbus Junction.  Rev. Dick Swartzendruber officiated.

    The Riverside City Council was expected Tuesday to ratify a new contract with the Riverside Casino & Golf Resort that likely will provide $1.2 million in direct revenue to the city annually. Discussion about the eight-year contract, which is about $500,000 less than the original one that expired in August, came during an approximate half-hour work session Monday.
    Because it was a work session, formal action was deferred to 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, September 23, to meet the 24-hour meeting notice required by Iowa code.

    The Highland cross country teams was part of the Washington invitational Tuesday, September 30, and the boys team took second place out of seven schools competing.

    Highland girls volleyball played at a tournament at New London Saturday, October 4. The girls started off the day against Harmony.
    “This was good game that a lot of the girls get a chance to get playing time,” said coach Christine Rath.
    “We won 21-5,21-8. Our next game was against West Burlington. After our first game we sat for two games and it seemed like the girls could not get the rhythm going against West Burlington.
    “We could not find the right groove.  We lost 10-21,7-21.
